Why Real Madrid Possess 'Total Faith' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an teenage creates club a historic moment in a pivotal European tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.
In only his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions secured a three-nil last-16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a last eight berth.
At 18 years old, Pitarch was the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.
A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy
This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.
He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.
Pitarch worked his way up to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and determination he brought to the side.
'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'
In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to train with the first team and awarded him playing time in the warm-up matches.
However, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing football, each day you head to training and every day you have a game," said Pitarch after his first appearance.
"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."
Handed a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he spent four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.
The teenager has seized it with performances that have defied his youth and experience.
"He's a very quick footballer, and you can see his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He is incredibly dynamic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and mobility."
The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.
"His greatest quality is his personality," continued he. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I understand fans might be astonished to see him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to perform what he usually does.
"He will continue to get chances with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, progressing through local academies before entering Real Madrid's famous youth academy.
He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the choice to play for both nations at senior international level.
According to international regulations, footballers may represent multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only final once they appear in a official senior international match.
Pitarch has featured for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are watching his progress with interest.
Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision so far. My situation is great with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."
His situation echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose La Roja, Diaz decided to represent Morocco.
Focus on the Future
At present, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.
He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at City, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with the German champions.
His substitution by another academy player in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to help the club chase trophies to come.
Following his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the same. We handle it very normally. I try not to think about it excessively - I must earn my minutes on the field," he said following the win at Etihad Stadium.
