Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from AI Company's Directors

Board Resignation
Summers announced he would retreat from public roles after legislative body disclosed his repeated communications with Jeffrey Epstein

Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is exiting the board at OpenAI, just days after a collection of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal the accused trafficker became widely known.

He commented in a release that he was "thankful for the chance to have contributed, optimistic about the promise of the organization, and anticipate following their progress".

Summers, who formerly presided over the prestigious university, declared on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his association with the convicted sex offender.

Email Communications

The recently released communications revealed that Summers communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding the financier's 2019 detention for suspected sex trafficking of minors.

In additional comments, the AI firm stated it understood Summers' choice to step down.

"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the perspective he brought to the directors," the organization stated.

Political Context

This development follows after the entire Congress of Congress decided on Tuesday to pass a legislation that would compel the Department of Justice to make public its files on Jeffrey Epstein.

The bill will subsequently move to the administration of President Trump for endorsement. The President has said he intends to endorse the bill, after reversing his stance on the matter following objections from his followers.

Message Details

A collection of Epstein-connected emails disclosed by the legislative panel recently referenced several prominent individuals in the billionaire's past associates, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those figures.

The emails revealed that the economist and the financier regularly had dinners together, with he often attempting to link Summers to notable international personalities.

Personal Response

After the emails were shared with the public, the former official expressed he assumed "complete accountability for my ill-advised choice to continue interacting with the financier".

He added that he hoped "to restore faith and fix relationships with the people closest to me".

Previous Positions

The economist occupied high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; serving as economic leader under President Clinton, and as head of the White House economic team under the former leader.

He presided over Harvard from the early 2000s and continues to be a faculty member there. When declaring his withdrawal from public roles recently on Monday, he said he would continue his academic responsibilities.

Additional Consequences

Following his declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning research organization in DC where the professor was a senior fellow, verified that he was ceased to be affiliated with the group.

Summers became part of the leadership of the AI company, which makes ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a defeated move to oust its CEO Sam Altman.
