Biden Bowl, Any Takers? Meloni to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause

Getting rid of unneeded gifts could be considered somewhat rude – unless it's done the right way.

A Charitable Sale

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, will offload a reported 270 gifts given to her by international figures on official trips. The diverse haul is said to contain gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.

The presents, collectively, have an approximate value of €800,000. The plan is to put up for sale to the highest bidder by a Italian fine art auction house. A date remains to be announced, although the goal is to hold the auction during the holiday season, with all funds raised going to a selection of charitable causes.

Palazzo Chigi Holdings

These gifts are currently stored in a storage room on the third floor of the prime minister's official office. Reports indicate that Meloni additionally intending to auction off gifts given to her preceding prime ministers that have been sitting unused for years.

A complete inventory remains made public, but some insight was gleaned earlier this year when a detailed register of items received was reviewed by officials. The question raised whether a rule restricting expensive presents was being respected. Legally, a prime minister cannot take home presents exceeding €300.

A Global Array of Presents

The collection includes:

  • A woven wrap from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A customary Indian garment from India's prime minister.
  • A box of jewellery from the president of Slovakia.
  • A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
  • A electronic pad from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Watercolour paintings from the Moldovan government.
  • Various other items including makeup, a skateboard, and several rugs from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Perhaps the most unusual gifts were the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," observers have said.

Diplomatic Backdrop

Meloni has been credited, mainly from her own political sphere, with winning over international counterparts and positioning Italy as a key protagonist on the global scene once again.

The forthcoming sale symbolizes a distinct method to handle the state presents that are collected during a time in office.
