‘All those silly things – do them’: The striker’s path from injury table to scoring with Athletic
Thehe initial occasion the Athletic striker played in England, an teenage representing the youth squad against Bundesliga youth at Wycombe’s stadium in September 2015, he found the net. During his subsequent match he played in England, against the English side following that, he converted. The third time, against the Citizens not long later, well, he scored again. Upon his comeback to Manchester to take on Manchester United at the sports complex in 2017, he scored again. A spectacular strike, too. “Actually,” he states, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve ever scored.” Thus the club did what they had to do: they substituted him.
“I got well angry,” the Athletic striker admits, before breaking into laughter. “Probably there’s a recording. Our match against United and I performed well. They kept me out of the second half: I hadn’t yet signed my contract, goals were flowing, speculation was rife, as you’d expect. I don’t know about interest from Newcastle, but I came across reports about Manchester United, standard transfer gossip. I have no idea how true it was, but supposing an offer came, I would have wanted to stay at Athletic. I feel lucky to be here.”
Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash
At the training ground, the Basque Country, the early training is set to begin; after it, the quick travel to the airport and another trip to England, this time to face Newcastle in the European elite competition on the upcoming match. Just saying those two words lights him up. It’s turning out to be a difficult season for Athletic, due in part to the pressures of their participation. Defeated late on in the weekend clash, they have won only one of their last eight matches and been defeated by Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in the continental stage. Yet, look at the overall situation, the memorable evenings and those that lie ahead, and a sense of thankful reflection within him.
In the 36 months since he had rejoined the team, the striker has been a semi-final participant, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by the English giants, and has boarded a decades-old barge up the Nervión estuary surrounded by a million fans after securing the Spanish cup, the first title in 40 years. Currently he stands as the club’s leading marksman in the European competition, where they are countercultural and returning after absence in a decade. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he states.
He considered it hard enough just to break into the senior squad and his assessment was correct. The son of the former Real Sociedad player Xabi Guruzeta and a season ticket holder at the club that are now his rivals, Guruzeta is a graduate of Antiguoko, the local academy that developed the coach, the former star and the tactician. He joined Athletic at 17 but after making his senior debut in August 2018, he went through a serious knee problem, dropped, a drop in category and a return before he could truly get a chance, returning at 26 to live the best days of their lives.
“You go into the academy doubting you’ll make the first team but with every stage you progress through you’re remaining and you can notice the proximity. You make it and … departure is necessary.” He had limited game time in half a dozen appearances between his bow and early 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches there and I tear my cruciate.
“It was a huge blow but In retrospect as a beneficial experience because it forced me to alter the perspective. Recovering from a long-term injury is challenging, but it’s beneficial. You adopt practices you didn’t have. Previously I was casual, but I would go to training and then head home, like when you’re a kid. At the complex, facilities are comprehensive, so utilize it all. Work, precaution. Get in the gym. If your hips aren’t balanced, address that. If your ankles are a 10, enhance it further. All those ‘silly things’: do them.
“At the top level you’re going to crash into players who have been in battles countless occasions. Extremely powerful. Seeing previous pictures: I had slender legs. Injuries are inevitable. Present-day images and the improvement is clear. Recovery revealed that. Practice concludes, but further effort is needed. Everyone else is ready, really ready; you have to be too.”
Minutes are crucial. The striker moved upset in the pandemic season, in his early twenties, dropping into the second division. With Sabadell in that season, he scored three times in 40 games. During his Amorebieta stint in the latter part of the season, the he found his form. “It’s a common path: transfers, releases. With a turnaround, effort, faith, and if one day a vacancy arises in your position, recall is possible. Readiness is vital. When the opportunity came, a fantasy realized. Lifting the cup, compete continentally, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”
Understandably he remarks savor the moment. All the more so after the previous season which, sometimes, was about endurance. From top scorer with 16 in 2023-24, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
