Addressing the Cashier That Made Me Absolutely Without Words – Kudos to You
This occurred on a Sunday morning, and I was sufficiently irritable, refueling my mum’s car. The location was a common fuel stop that doubles as a grocery store, which often leads of ending up in line customers carrying goods of somewhat expensive items. A terrible fate to happen when your only desire is to pay for some fuel. Awful.
I was fourth in the waiting line. There was only employee working, a youthful clerk. Something stood out to her presence. After the ditherer at the first position had finally paid for his Viakal, a baked snack, and some breakfast items, It seemed to me I heard the cashier wish him a wonderful day. Strange. Could be I misunderstood, or possibly she uttered it and used a mocking tone. I pondered if she might actually be a supporter in the war on delays, echoing my disdain for those who delay simple fuel-buyers like me.
Taking a step forward, to third in the queue. The next shopper of the queue discharged her fuel-only transaction with commendable speed. Once more it happened: “Wishing you a marvelous day.” No, actually, it was “may your day be absolutely splendid”. An American? Here in Stourbridge? The pronunciation indicated it, and no British person says to others those exact words, or merely a pleasant day. Highly unusual. You don’t get people from America visiting this town, and definitely not holding jobs in fueling spots or other places.
Second in line at last. Behind a poor older woman embroiled in a lengthy struggle with her shopping cart, her groceries, her purse and her rewards card. This took an eternity. Once completed, she as well was wished to have a fantastic day. Yes, American for sure. I might have verified it by cracking a joke at the cashier, to check for that thing their typical stare, without a smile, and state very earnestly: “That is quite humorous.” However, nothing occurred of a jest to say.
In the end, I embraced the genuine warmth – or a mimicry of sincerity, which amounts to identical in effect – with which she looked straight at me, piercingly, and told me a wonderful day. I felt better for it. Beneficial indeed.
